EROSION CONTROL

Hydromulch’s comprehensive land rehabilitation services will help revitalise soil and vegetation, prevent erosion and ensure healthier vegetation

Erosion Control

Hydromulch utilises Erosion control blankets (ECB) for slope stabilisation and the establishment of vegetation on extreme civil sites. Read More

ECB’s  are applied to slopes to prevent any further wind or water erosion of the insitu material and to assist with the retention of moisture in the side slopes.

Hydromulch favours  ECB’s constructed of Jute material which is a coarse, open mesh of  biodegradable fabric. The Jute’s woven mesh provides immediate erosion control and a stable medium to support healthy plant growth. Approximately 60% of the area is open, allowing light, water and nutrients to easily pass through to the underlying soil. Whilst the jute retains water, creating a localised water reservoir for the soil below, the open mesh provides a “trap” for soil, seeds, water and nutrients. With time, the jute material biodegrades, enhancing the soil fertilisation and the cohesive strength of the root systems. At this point the flexible nature of the plants become the primary stabilising and protecting element. Depending on climate conditions, the biodegradation period is typically 2-3 years.

Dust Control

Introducing Posi-Shell Clear: the economical, eco-friendly dust control solution. Wind erosion, water
erosion, traffic and industrial construction activities all contribute to the perpetuation of fugitive dust dispersal and airborne particle pollution.Read More

When people think of air pollution, giant pre-cast concrete smoke stacks usually come to mind. But the real culprit behind the leading causes of air pollution, in both developed and developing countries, is dust. According to the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency, road dust is identified as the Number One cause of air pollution in America. There is a growing demand from corporates and governments for environmentally sound dust control solutions.

Hydromulch has the answer: Posi-Shell clear is effective, bio-degradable and 100% non-toxic . Non-toxic, natural and eco-friendly. Hydromulch’s exclusive Posi-Shell Clear system provides you with cutting-edge, ecologically sound and affordable dust-control polymer technology. Why choose Posi-Shell Clear? Posi-Shell Clear is unique in that it is made out of a completely non-toxic, all-natural and 100% biodegradable cellulose-based proprietary blend. A patent-pending innovation in dust control technology, it contains no calcium chloride, and is completely free of polyacrylamide (P.A.M.). Calcium chloride is usually found in concrete mixtures, in order to help with cohesion and setting, but its chloride ions are highly corrosive, making it an unacceptably dangerous product for man and nature. Though polyacrylamide is, in itself, is not considered toxic, it can possibly contain unpolymerized acrylamide elements, which are classed as dangerous neurotoxins. Polyacrylamide is a synthesized chemical compound: the thermal decomposition of its chemical bonds is known to release a host of harmful by-products, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide – all of which add up to a high carbon footprint. On the other hand, Posi-Shell Clear is a proprietary blend of cellulosic polymers. Cellulose is an organic compound – it is the primary structural component of which the cellular walls of all green plants are composed. It is the most common organic compound on Earth – you just don’t get greener than that! By utilising cellulosic compounds in our product range, Hydromulch remains on the forefront of the green-tech revolution, alongside such other pioneering developments as the harnessing of cellulose ethanol for the purposes of bio-fuel development.

Simply mix the Posi-Shell Clear polymer powder with water, and apply it to your desired surface. This can be done using a water truck, a HydroSeeder unit or a specialised Posi-Shell Clear mixing station. The mixture creates a surface-bonding “glue”, which acts to bind particles to each other, as well as to the surface. The mixture quickly and effectively penetrates and bonds dusty surfaces, creating a transparent layer that is resistant to wind erosion, water erosion and dust dispersal. Posi-Shell Clear is guaranteed to dramatically reduce the need for, and frequency with which, the surface area is treated and re-watered. This saves you costs on labour, man-power, maintenance and fuel. The surface becomes less susceptible to various types of erosion and dust development. Unlike traditional dust control wetting methods, Posi-Shell Clear does not evaporate as soon as the water molecules in the mixture do. Rather, it remains bound to the surface, hours after evaporation, and can stay for days without needing to be re-wet. Decreased reliance on water expenditure is yet another way in which Hydromulch continues to employ and instil environmentally conscious practices with every solution we offer.

Hydromulch is uniquely enabled to provide you with environmental management solutions that utilise the latest in eco-friendly technology. Speak to us about Posi-Shell Clear today, and get the best results for your dust control needs.

Wind Barrier Netting

Wind barriers are erected around sensitive areas of where prevailing winds prervent the successful establishment of vegetation. Read More

The barrier netting is to be secured with either wooden or steel poles placed at varying intervals depending on site conditions

Sand Bags

Sand bags are to be placed on erosion gullies that have developed at the shoulder break point of the side slope embankments and at other sensitive environmental areas on the terrain.

Vegetation Cylinders

Vegetation Cylinders are netlon tubes usually filled with an organic material e.g. wood chips.Read More

The cylinders are used to retain soil in applications where the existing material (slope) is too hard for normal successful vegetation establishment (roots have difficulty in penetrating hard surface).

The cylinders are filled and then fixed to the slope horizontally (with wooden/steel stakes & wire) forming rows roughly 1 (one) meter apart.

Topsoil is then placed between the cylinders, The slope can then be scarified and hydroseeded.

The Disadvantages of Vegetation cylinders are:
•    Relies heavily on the succession of grasses to colonise affected areas for a
long term vegetative solution.
•    UV Degradable and over time may leave bare areas where erosion can form.
•    Veld fires can cause extensive damage to Netlon tubes.

Silt Fence

A silt fence, is a temporary sediment control device used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, lakes and seas from sediment (loose soil) in storm water runoff.Read More

Silt fences are widely used on construction sites globally, due to their low cost and simple design.
Silt fences can be considered at the bottom of the ravines to trap sediment washing down the slopes and on areas subjected to sediment accumulation.

Silt fence’s typically come in  500mm, coarse, nonwoven, polypropylene, staple fiber geotextile combined with a polyester reinforcing mesh and colored to blend naturally with the landscape for aesthetic appeal. Silt fence is placed vertically on posts to prevent sediment carried by water migrating downstream or down slopes.

Posi-Shell Environmental Coatings

Posi-Shell Environmental Coatings offer you a series of uses when it comes to your waste management, construction site preparation needs, erosion control and slope stabilisation.

When it comes to meeting environmental regulations, Posi-Shell products exceed expectations. The unique, cement-based formula provides exceptional cover, control and mitigation for all major environmental hazard vectors associated with other non-land fill applications, such as stockpile covering, erosion control, dust control, ditch lining and slope stabilisation in construction sites and industrial development areas.

Posi-Shell® is a spray-applied, mineral mortar coating, similar to stucco that is the ideal erosion control solution when successful performance is imperative. Posi-Shell effectively stabilizes highway slopes, controls dust at chemical facilities and other industrial sites and controls erosion at construction sites.

Formulations of Posi-Shell® can be created to provide varying degrees of long term erosion control.  By simply increasing the amount of gauging material and decreasing the coverage area (which results in a thicker application), erosion control coatings can function in place for up to several years.  Similarly, by decreasing the amount of gauging material and increasing cover area short term control such as dust control can be applied easily and economically.  Because of the highly adhesive qualities of Posi-Shell it will adhere to any surface at any angle, even an overhang.

Posi-Shell is fast becoming a valuable erosion control tool in non-landfill related industries such as public works, mining, municipalities, road construction and chemical facilities.

There are erosion control applications for which the “right answer” is to establish vegetation.  Sometimes the answer is a roll out membrane, but there are times when neither of these is ideal or even a possibility and yet erosion control is still required.

Posi-Shell is non-flammable and extremely durable. Simple to mix and easy to use, Posi-Shell consists of water, fibres, and mineral setting agents. Portland Cement is then added in varying quantities depending on desired durability and various colours can be added to the mix if so desired. Because it forms a durable, non-flammable crust that resists wind and water erosion, Posi-Shell is ideal for applications such as ditch-lining, dust control, cover for contaminated soil, compost, coal, or cement clinker piles, mining applications, voc suppression, sludge tar lagoons, and similar industrial purposes.

Posi Seed

Hydromulch believes that it only makes ecological sense to provide environmental conservation and development solutions that adhere to environmentally responsible processes and protocols. We have developed a breakthrough innovation in soil erosion control and germination enhancement. Read More

Posi-Seed utilises thermal activation technologies, in order to promote enhanced seed propagation. An earth-friendly alternative to the usual reliance on artificial ingredients such as rubber, or soil-disrupting matting procedures, Posi-Seed’s specialised mulch blend creates the perfect micro-climate for your seeds to grow and thrive – naturally! This revolutionary new method completely removes the need for the chemical treatment of seeds as well as artificial methods of soil preparation, such as with Jute.

Choose natural, organic, thermo-active solutions that produce favourable conditions for your seeds to germinate. Choose Posi-Seed, the truly environmentally- conscious alternative.

Simply prepare your Posi-Seed mulch mixture, plant it into the soil (for example, by means of hydraulic seeding), and watch as your vegetation develops, stabilising the soil structure as it grows. Choose ecoethical solutions with which to combat the effects of soil erosion, and ensure the promotion of optimal growth and nutrient uptake for your vegetation.

Hydromulch believes in the cause of soil preservation, environmental conservation and the promotion of healthy, lush and thriving vegetation. In order to achieve this goal successfully, it needs to be facilitated in an ecologically sensitive manner. Posi-Seed provides environmental solutions for soil conservation. Posi-Seed is Hydromulch’s environmentally-friendly mineral mortar coating solution, which is applied to the soil surface area by means of spraying or hydraulic seeding. When mixed with wood fibre much that has been thermally refined with finely ground volcanic rock, it forms a slurry blend that creates the ideal micro-climate for germination of seeds blended into the slurry mixture. Posi-Seed is a world first in environmentally sustainable alternatives to soil erosion control surface preparation and treatment methods: instead of having to rely on invasive blanket or matting surface preparations, which entail a further.

Vetiver

Chrysopogon zizanioides, commonly known as Vetiver (derived from Tamil word: வெட்டிவேர் vettiver) is a perennial grass of the Poaceae family. Vetiver can grow up to 1.5 metres high and form clumps as wide. Read More

The stems are tall and the leaves are long, thin, and rather rigid; the flowers are brownish-purple. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontally spreading, mat-like root systems, Vetiver’s roots grow downward, 2–4 m in depth. The most commonly used commercial genotypes of Vetiver are sterile (do not produce fertile seeds), and because vetiver propagates itself by small offsets instead of underground stolons, these genotypes are non-invasive and can easily be controlled by cultivation of the soil at the boundary of the hedge. Vetiver grass is used extensively for erosion and sediment control in a wide variety of applications. the Vetiver system, a technology of soil conservation and water quality management, is based on the use of the Vetiver plant.

Vegitation Establishment

All Hydromulch vegetation establishment works are guaranteed. Hydromulch works in accordance with section 5800 of the Colto specification which states that it is the contractor’s responsibility for establishing an acceptable cover and for the cost of replanting grass or re-hydroseeding where no acceptable cover has been established.Read More

An acceptable grass cover shall mean that not less than 75% of the area grassed or hydroseeded shall be covered with grass and that no bare patches exceeding 0,25 m² in any area of 1 m² shall occur.

The maintenance period in respect of grass shall commence when an acceptable grass cover as defined above has been established and shall be one year. This means that the maintenance period in respect of grass can commence earlier or later than the maintenance period for other parts of the contract.

Hydromulch maintains the vegetated areas for a period of 12 months during which time all erosion gullies repaired by main contractor shall be reseeded. A 12 month period will allow for the succession of perennial vegetation and the long term sustainability of the applied vegetative type.
